Feep Ecology: The Origin of Feeping

Someone asked me at some point if I thought of the feeps as actual size, or if I considered them to be miniature representations of much larger monsters. The truth is, I absolutely think of them as being actual size, and have, over the years, compiled something of a backstory for how they came to be amongst us, what they're doing here, and whither they may go next. If you wish to delve further into feep, read on.

Where do they come from?
The monsters themselves have their origins in the Victorian era, a time that was peculiar for its intersection of the scientific and the fantastical, where Darwin's theory of evolution was coexisting with a belief in the existence of fairies. Meanwhile, the industrial revolution ushered in a variety of machines designed to replace human labor, especially in the arena of menial or repetitive tasks. One such device was the Amazing Everything Machine.
The Amazing Everything Macine
This bizarre little steampunk contraption turns out to be an important part of feep lore. As you may know, "feeping creatures" is a design term, a spoonerism of "creeping features." What are creeping features? They are extraneous bells and whistles added to whatever it is you're designing that bog it down and make it into a sprawling, lumbering beast. The Amazing Everything Machine was supposed to do Absolutely Everything: clean, dust, make tea, boil water, answer the door ... it did none of these things especially well, but by jove, it did them.

What happened next was a strange confluence of circumstances: an ultra-concentrated dose of creeping featurism meets the design of the industrial age meets an unusually thin barrier between science and fantasy, and from all this we get that most Victorian of creatures: a supernatural manifestation! Or, in this case, an infestation of manifestations. Every Everything Machine was prone to spawning little monsters that would run off to do whatever it is little monsters are wont to do.

How did modern feeps get here?
Clearly creeping featurism and labor-saving devices have not left us, but in the modern day the science/fantasy barrier is more clearly defined. Feeps are not as apt to spontaneously generate as they were in Victorian times. In fact, their current spawning seems to take place exclusively around me (Dylan Edwards, B.A., and resident Feep Sciences Expert). What this suggests about my own grasp on reality I do not care to contemplate. All I can tell you is that I have my fair share of devices prone to creeping featurism, and that I seem to have a perpetual supply of monsters. Sometimes their proximity to the devices causes one to wonder.
Coil Arm Monster
Cause and effect? Or false correlation, as per the old belief that mice spontaneously generate from sacks of grain? All I can tell you is that more research is needed.

What do they eat?
Do feeps eat? They must get their energy from somewhere, but as far as I can tell, any efforts on their part to consume food are merely done for the sake of appearances, and that they are actually powered by pure mischief. In this regard they are more or less identical to cats.
